Meet with Ritz Vintage

Ritz Vintage Stockholm

Meet with Ritz Vintage

Ritz Vintage is a vintage shop located in SOFO, the hype district of Stockholm. SOFO is where the coolest Swedes hang out.
Enjoy our interview with Nettan, one of the owners of Ritz Vintage!

TPH: When did you start Ritz Vintage?

Ritz Vintage: We opened Ritz Vintage in January 2016. So it’s new compared to the other vintage boutiques in Stockholm.

TPH: Why did you start Ritz vintage?

Ritz Vintage: I had been working for other vintage boutiques and involved in the secondhand business, and it was my dream to open my own boutiques for a long time. Ritz was a part of Lisa Larsson Secondhand (well known in Sofo, Stockholm), the vintage boutique next door, and selling mainly men’s vintage clothes. When I got a chance to buy this shop from the former owner, I decided to open my own shop.

TPH: What type of vintage clothes can your customer find in your vintage shop?

Ritz Vintage: We have mixed style vintage items from the 60’s to 90’s. The majority is from the 70’s to 80’s, we try to keep a good balance between man and woman even though we started with men’s vintage clothing. When I look for items, I try to find attractive and unique items. The customer’s age to our shop is also different, from teenagers to old people. Sometimes customer come to shop for the costume party!

TPH: Where are your vintage items coming from?

Ritz Vintage: Our supplier is ranging from Italian vintage wholesaler to customers who have big closets. I enjoy shopping in Swedish flea-markets.

TPH: What’s the meaning of the store name?

Ritz Vintage: The meaning of the name is “Get dressed, Dressed classy” in Italian. It’s also the name of a legendary nightclub in Stockholm in the 80’s.

TPH: We love Ritz’s logo and the illustrations. Who’s drawing them?

Ritz Vintage: It’s my husband, Kristopher! He’s an illustrator, and we are running this shop together. So when I’m not in the shop, he will be here for you.

TPH: Why vintage clothing?

Ritz Vintage: I don’t agree with today’s fashion business trend because it’s not sustainable. Mass production and mass consumption in fashion are damaging the environment and killing originality. I’m concerned about the environment and want to do good things by encouraging exchanging second-hand clothing instead of buying new items. With vintage items, you don’t look like everyone else.

TPH: I can see your interest in music from the posters and the decoration in the shop. Do you do something with music?

Ritz Vintage: Yes! I love music, and we occasionally host a live music event in the shop! So this shop becomes like a dance floor.

TPH: What do you think about TPH?

Ritz Vintage: I like TPH for featuring local vintage boutiques and making us connected to the vintage lovers all over the world!

Meet with Modern Retro

Modern retro in Stockholm

Meet with Modern Retro

Modern Retro is a vintage shop located in the island of Södermalm, in Stockholm (They now moved! Check their new address here). It’s filled with vintage pieces, deadstock and second hand from the 1920’s – 80’s. Clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture, vinyls,  instruments and other oddities. Head over to Mariatorget metro station to find this vintage goldmine, best described as “the secret garage”.

Totte Modern Retro

We met with local celebrity Totte, owner of Modern Retro.

TPH: What’s your background?

Modern Retro: I used to be a musician, playing in a band called “Tequila Girls”. We toured in Sweden and other European cities, and still have some fans in the UK, Germany and Poland!

TPH: Who’s working at Modern Retro?

Modern Retro: Only me. I’m always here!

TPH: When did you open your vintage shop?

Modern Retro: I opened my own shop in April 2003, but at the time I was sharing this place with other vintage boutiques. Each of us were selling different types of vintage items; one focused on furniture, one was selling mostly American vintage while the other focused more on European vintage. I took over the whole place in 2005, and since then I’ve been running Modern Retro by myself.

TPH: How did you get into the business of vintage clothing?

Modern Retro: I worked with music in a small boutique on Södermalm, for a technology company. After some time, that company went bankrupt and I lost my job. My friend then asked me if I’d be willing to take over his shop, and since I’d always been interested in having my own boutique, I decided to go for it. I had been into fashion, and especially vintage clothing, for a long time. I enjoyed designing clothes and creating remakes, I even made my own patterns.

TPH: What type of vintage clothes can your customers find at Modern Retro?

Modern Retro: Today most of the items are European vintage clothes, but some are from the US. I still have some furniture and antique items from 20’s – 90’s. But I can say that items from 30’s – 40’s are difficult to find nowadays. It’s also harder to find men’s clothes because men are more likely to use items until they are worn out. Women on the other hand like to have more clothes as they tend to care more about seasonal trends.

TPH: Who comes to your shop?

Modern Retro: Both men and women, the age range is quite diverse. In the summer time, many tourists from different countries visit my shop.

TPH.co: Where do your vintage items come from?

Modern Retro: I have some partners who supply products. But I love to pick items by myself, traveling and looking for items in flea markets and different vintage boutiques, both inside and outside of Sweden. It gives me inspiration and the excitement of treasure hunting.

TPH.co: Why do you like vintage items?

Modern Retro: One of the reasons why I like vintage is the quality. Back in the day, clothes were made to last longer, not like today, when people change their clothes several times per year.

Meet with Lotta Vintage

Meet Lotta Vintage

Lotta Vintage is a vintage shop located close by the Odenplan subway station, in Stockholm.

Lotta Vintage
TPH: Tell us about your vintage shop!
What can we find there?

Lotta Vintage: Hi, I’m Lotta, the owner of Lotta Vintage and I’m running my shop by myself. So if you visit Lotta Vintage, I will be always here! I’m specializing in trends from the 60s to the 90s.

I’m trying to have fashionable items in good condition. I don’t have that many sporty outfits, but more elegant items. Most of the items are from France, Belgium, and Sweden. I have some partnership with agents and private people for consignment program, but I also travel to different flea markets and enjoy buying things by myself.

TPH: Who are your main customers?

Lotta Vintage: The majority of my customers are ladies around 30 to 40 years old. But it’s changing, because nowadays vintage fashion became more trendy, the younger generation started to come to my shop.

I’m happy that more and more people started to realize that vintage / secondhand clothes are the good alternatives for the mainstream fashion.

TPH: We love your selection! What do you care about when you pick vintage items?

Lotta Vintage: I care about the quality and design, but items can be anything as long as it tells me something. I believe in my inspiration and pick up things I like.

TPH.co: When and why did you start your shop?

Lotta Vintage: I started the current shop, Lotta Vintage here in Stockholm on July 1st, 2014. Before starting this shop, I have had two shops in Madrid. I was studying fashion in Madrid, and I loved clothes. So I decided to start a fashion boutique by myself. The first shop was big and selling men’s clothing. The second shop was also named “Lotta Vintage”, focusing on female clothes.

TPH.co: That’s interesting that you had a vintage boutique in Madrid! Can you tell us more about that?

Lotta Vintage: In Madrid, my shop space was bigger so it’s enough to sell both men and women’s clothes. But today I am on my own and space is smaller, I focus on female items and am trying to fill my shop with interesting and quality vintage clothes. The business size is smaller but I like female clothes more because of their variety and I’m satisfied with the quality of my shop.

When I started my first vintage boutique in Madrid, there were few vintage shops in Madrid and I was one of the first shops for secondhand clothes. Today you can find many vintage shops in Madrid, and the Spanish vintage market seems to be bigger than here. However, the vintage market was not mature comparing to as it is today when I was there. For example, consignment program was not common, people liked more conservative fashion and had a negative image in secondhand clothes. On the other hand, in Stockholm today, I have a lot of customers who own special vintage pieces and sell them through my store, and I feel people here appreciate vintage more.

TPH.co: Why do you like Vintage clothes?

Lotta Vintage: First of all, I’m a fan of vintage clothing for a long time. I enjoyed wearing my grandma’s clothes! Second, I don’t like just chasing the trends. I believe if you want to have a personal style, vintage is a perfect choice. In vintage shops, you can find more variety of items and none of them are identical. Finding a good vintage item is like a treasure hunt. Each vintage item has its own story, and I like to think about the history of those vintage items.

What do you think about today’s fashion?

Lotta Vintage: Regarding the recent fashion in Sweden, I think it’s pretty nice because I feel all fashion style is permitted today. If you look at the streets in Stockholm, of course, many people are wearing black especially it’s the winter time. However, you can still find many alternative styles here: punk, casual, elegant, ethnic, sustainable…whatever you like. The fashion today is more diverse and it’s sync to my philosophy as a vintage seller; style as you like and be more original.

TPH.co: Thank you very much Lotta.

We are looking forward to see more of your items on TPH.co!
